SpotLight on Ayckbourn: Mr Whatnot

The latest SpotLight on Ayckbourn video is now live looking at Alan Ayckbourn’s sixth play, Mr Whatnot.

Largely ignored when examining the playwright’s career, Mr Whatnot has a far more significant role in the play canon than is generally supposed. It is not only his first play to transfer to the West End but is also directly responsible for him writing his breakout play, Relatively Speaking.

The video looks at the background to the play, how Alan intended to use it to showcase his skills as a director and how what began as his most successful play yet quickly became his greatest failure with unforeseen consequences.

SpotLight on Ayckbourn: Mr Whatnot is researched, written, narrated and edited by Alan Ayckbourn’s Archivist, Simon Murgatroyd M.A. and can be found on the Ayckbourn YouTube channel by clicking here.
