Welcome to the Family – The First Ayckbourn Premiere of 2023

The world premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s new play, Welcome to the Family, has been announced by The Old Laundry Theatre, Bowness-on-Windermere.

This will be the playwright’s 88th play and his second to premiere in the Lake District venue with a second world premiere, Constant Companions, premiering at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, later in the year.

Welcome to the Family is set in a not too distant future where Josh is keen to introduce his fiancée Sara to his parents – Lord and Lady Meizner. However, they are deceased, which is normally a bit of a problem…

Enter Josh’s wicked Uncle Lance who has gifted him a state-of-the-art ‘Capture’ visit to the past enabling him to revisit his deceased parents and family home whenever he likes.

Celebratory champagne flows but family secrets are also about to be spilled in this new comedy by one of the country’s most successful and popular playwrights.

Alan Ayckbourn. will direct the play, which will run from 12 – 27 May, with casting to be announced. It will be a five-hander and his first to premiere at the venue in-the-round. In 2022, Sir Alan premiered a three-hander, three-sided ‘chamber piece’ All Lies at The Old Laundry; Welcome to the Family is a full-scale two act play.

Tickets are available to book now and include the opportunity to book a Dine Out package which includes a two-course meal at the Old Laundry Bistro. Tickets are priced from £20 and available via www.oldlaundrytheatre.co.uk.
