It’s a little known Ayckbourn fact but the playwright nearly wrote the screenplay for the movie Clue, based on the boardgame of the same name.
Back in 1981, he was approached by a Hollywood Studio to write the screenplay for a movie based on Clue – or Cluedo as it’s known in the UK. It’s a fascinating piece of trivia with the correspondence relating to it held in the Ayckbourn Archives in the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York.
You can find out all about Alan’s aborted involvement in the movie in the latest video – Unseen Ayckbourn: Clue the Movie – on the Ayckbourn YouTube Channel, including rarely seen documents pertaining to the proposal.
This is the first of a series of videos looking at little known aspects of Alan’s writing career drawn from my book, Unseen Ayckbourn. You can see the video here and please don’t forget to subscribe if you enjoy the video or any other material on the channel.
Clue is also showing at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, this week on 245 – 25 September. Click here for more details.
